Happy Days Ain’t Here Again
In 2016, a plurality of Republican primary voters chose Sleazy Don as their nominee. A few months later, a majority of voters in swing states elected him to the highest office in the land. It was a stunning rebuke. The Great & Good were appalled! It was as if an aggressive cancer had attacked the body politic.
The first remedy was radiation and chemo — RESIST and a special counsel. It didn’t work. Next came surgery (impeachment). That failed. Now . . . alas . . . a cure is on the horizon in the form of AOW (Amiable Old Windbag) and WOC (Woman of Color). Current polling data indicates that they will send Don into exile and maybe run the table by taking a majority in the Senate and ending the filibuster. The road ahead is open! A new dawn has arrived! I don’t think so.
There is a civil war inside the Democratic party. The progressive wing is ascendant. They didn’t get their candidate, but they got the platform. Comma-la is a progressive, even if not pure enough to suit some. The platform isn’t the Green New Deal (a complete reorganization of the American economy); it’s the Pale Green New Deal (we’ll reorganize it a little at a time — boiling the frog). I foresee the progressives winning the war and pursuing a radical lurch to the left that will produce a backlash.
Trump is not the disease; he is a symptom. The malady is that the road to a progressive paradise has an obstacle. Deplorables may not be a majority, but they are a significant minority and they are not going away. We deplorables believe the country was founded in search of liberty in 1776, not in search of slavery in 1619. Putting the word “Democratic” in front of the word socialism does not change the outcome for us.
People came from all over the world to pursue the American dream. That dream was freedom of religion, freedom of speech and freedom to create wealth without fear of confiscation. The Bill of Rights (limiting the reach of government) was their beacon. Some of their descendants have evolved and WOKE to the joys of group rights and redistribution, but time will tell whether they can convert the retrograde remnants. The Inquisition is under way on social media. I predict that it will fail. If nothing else, we won’t go quietly to the rack.
My prediction is that partisanship will not dissipate when AOW and WOC win. If the progressives win the fight for the soul of the Democratic party, partisan rancor will intensify. Someone will emerge to lead the resistance.
